This longitudinal dataset tracks the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 6.1.1: the proportion of the population using at least basic drinking water services. Data is presented as a percentage (0-100%) for 186 countries and territories, covering a 23-year period. 'Basic' services are defined as drinking water from an improved source, provided collection time is not more than 30 minutes for a round trip including queuing.
High consistency across the time series. The dataset is derived from harmonized household surveys and census data. Most columns are fully populated; some countries show 100% access, reflecting saturated coverage in developed economies.
Monitoring international progress towards SDG 6, analyzing the correlation between economic growth and infrastructure development, identifying regions requiring urgent water-security interventions, and global health research.
The dataset provides a national-level aggregate and does not reveal disparities between urban and rural populations or specific sub-national regions. It also does not measure the 'safety' (contamination levels) of the water, only the 'access' and 'service level'.
The data is estimated by the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme using a linear regression model based on available data points from national censuses, household surveys (like MICS and DHS), and administrative records.
